“Tata Bye Bye” is an animated short film directed by Deepak Subba, based on the story “Escape: A Tale of Two Children.” The film seeks to capture fragments of childhood memories. It presents a tender narrative about children’s innocence, their small and fragile world, and how family and social circumstances can influence and shape their lives.
The story centers on two siblings—Karya, the elder sister, and her younger brother Popo. Karya is always protective and deeply caring toward her brother. Together, they spend their days in a small hill village. Through the presence of a few supporting characters, the film also beautifully portrays the rhythm and lifestyle of rural village life.
A turning point arrives when their uncle comes to the village from the big city to take them with him. Filled with excitement, the children happily say goodbye to everyone, believing they are leaving only for a short trip—unaware that they are seeing their home, their friends, and their mother for the last time.
At a deeper level, the story subtly reflects the desire of families to send their children to big cities in pursuit of better education and a brighter future.
