Creation is a poetic reflection on the act of making art. The film shows a canvas coming alive, with playful abstract forms taking shape, each carrying its own human narrative. It has no dialogue and runs about six minutes.
The title carries a double meaning. In Hungarian, “alkotás” can mean both the process of creating and the finished artwork. The film plays on this: the work begins to take on a life of its own, and the creator watches it unfold.
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival is the most important gathering in the animation world. Creation was selected for the Official Competition in the short films category and won the Vimeo Staff Pick Award for a Short Film. The award combines a festival prize with a Vimeo Staff Pick.
In their jury statement, the Vimeo curation team said that this year’s festival shorts were full of handcrafted artistry, and that those qualities feel newly threatened by the spread of AI-generated imagery. They called Creation delightful and mesmerizing. That context makes the win worth noting. A film about the human hand behind a work of art won in a year when that question mattered.
Béla Klingl graduated from the Animation School of the Hungarian University of Applied Arts in 1999. He founded the KGB Visual Workshop that year and KGB Studio in 2002, which produces commercials and television titles as well as animated films. Creation was produced by K.G.B. Studio. Klingl also served as VFX supervisor on the Oscar-winning Anora and on several films by Ildikó Enyedi. His earlier credits include the short reMake (2018).
Creation is a more personal and abstract piece than his earlier work, and it shows a director thinking about his own craft.
Five Hungarian productions were selected for Annecy 2026’s competition sections, with Creation one of three in the short films competition. It belongs to a growing wave of Hungarian animation reaching international audiences.
